NONPOINT SOURCE  POLLUTION:

Nonpoint Source Pollution (NPS) is pollution that originates from multiple sources and when combined can have devastating results. Transported during rainstorms or snowmelt NPS Pollution is the combination of such things as residential lawn fertilizers, runoff from parking lots, agricultural runoff, stormwater erosion etc. The risk of this type of pollution is greatest in the spring when the ground is still frozen or saturated and there is a snowmelt or rainstorm.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP !

Great Sodus Bay, Port Bay, Blind Sodus Bay and all of Wayne County’s streams, harbors and waterways can benefit from your help. By following a few simple steps we all can help prevent this type of pollution.

  • If you are on a septic system – pump it out regularly. Don’t wait for the system to fail.
  • If you own riparian property don’t use lawn fertilizers unless absolutely necessary.
  • If you are clearing land for any purpose, implement an erosion & sediment control plan.
  • Farmers should incorporate manure into the soil immediately after applying to the ground.
  • Farmers should never apply manure to frozen or saturated ground.
  • Boaters & fishing enthusiasts never leave fishing line or trash in or near the water.
  • Everyone should urge their elected officials to support clean water efforts.
